Hi M33.

Hmm, Well the song has some jungle feel to it. The percussion seems pretty neat. Unfortunately the bass seems to have missed the mark. I think the most obvious issue with this song is that it does not progress to a climax. I think you need melodies too. Use around 2 basses and 3 or 4 lead instruments to get the nice vibes. Fx sounds too. Your mixing and mastering seems well done. You should venture into video game music. I think you would be better in that section since your instruments are very 16 bit-ish.

August V??? Okay, I will still call you M33. 5/5 and 9/10. Next song of yours add lots more instruments. A lot more.

Bye for now

M33plord responds:

Aye.

Hi S.... Umm pneumatic

So I read the past reviewers. They seem to have a point. Your instruments sound a bit generic to me. I think the EQ may not be a big issue for this type of song..but your instruments need a face lift. I remember when I first used to love that trance lead when starting to make electronic music. Eventually you realize that it isn't as good as you thought it was. Your kicks seem pretty good. Using them in another song sounds like a good idea.

Your going to need to do some automation work. There is no filter changes, panning, delay, and imaging. Also note that the fuzziness to the instruments may be popular on NG, but outside of NG it tells the listener that the EQing was roughly done. If your going for this kind of fuzz music than by all means EQ like you did for this song. However, if your looking to expand into new ideas, EQ should be the first area to work on. I'm still learning too.

Lastly, mix it up with the notation. Try some 1/16, 1/32, half notes, etc...basically try some off beat stuff to increase the diversity. Like VeX said, I also tell you this for good reasons. Your getting better.

Hi Ian,

This must be some really high quality song. 6.4mb for less than a 3 minute song. Personally, as long as I can hear all the instruments and there is no clipping, I find the mastering and mixing to be just fine. I'm wondering how you got "Mars" from this song.

Umm, so I'm not the best person to review DnB music. Not a big fan of it. Anyway....

I like that alien theme sound to start the song. The amount of reverb seems just about right.

Well I guess drums is like 50% of the criteria for what makes good DnB music. I'm looking for some unique drum patterns, but I notice the standard drum beat. At least it doesn't sound like that familiar fruity loop dnb pattern tons of the unexperienced DnB musicians use. Your snare drum rolls seem to be in the right place at the right time.

You like to use a lot of those funky instruments. I guess it matches your mood your going for in your CD. I'm not sure if that's what other DnB artists on here prefer. (This doesn't refer to me since I'm not a DNB artist) I don't mind the bass, but I think the bass composition needs more variety. For example, at 56 seconds in you keep that same bass pattern going on for the rest of the song. At least, some automation changes might have added some diversity. I do have to give you kudos for the darker lower bass instrument. It has a simple pattern that is kinda give me dance vibes.

Some alien like fx sounds would have helped. Not sure if DnB is technically allowed to use anything else besides drums and bass.....but fx would make this song sound better.

Lastly, kudos on the kick pattern to end your song. Lots of musicians continually place the kicks in the most obvious places.

Here is a 5/5 vote and 9/10 review. I think since your CD is going to be ambient based, you should not put other genre of songs in the CD.

Thanks for the review! I will more in-depth counter review later.
(I honestly dont have the time to do a counter review, sorry D:)

Hi Nosebleed,

This one actually sounds different from the other house songs on NG. I give you kudos for the originality. Here is my review.

Yes, the typical house kick is nice though I did think the solo kicks were a bit too long.
15 seconds in and I love what you did with your umm percussion? Nice job. I also like the buildup happening to 1:00 minute.

Unfortunately at 1:00 I was expecting for the climax and didn't get it. Sounds more like ambient here. Pretty pads though.

2:00 I like what you did with your sidechaining. I like those kicks and percussion. The only issue is that you probably compressed the kicks way too much muffling out the lead instrument. (Maybe you skipped the whole sidechaining process and found a kick that already has a sidechaining effect...I don't know....I'm assuming you did sidechain intentionally though)

3:00 the lead instrument seems to be playing too much dissonance. It isn't in tune. Fortunately it seems to fit better at 3:30 This is the best part of your song.

4:00 sounds pretty nice. I was expecting something big to come out of it, but well the song just ended.

So I think you might need some better EQing on the dirty instruments. The song kinda starts slow but it gets going halfway through. House is fun to make. Glad you had fun making this. 5/5 and 9/10 review.

DJ-NOSEBLEED responds:

I sidechained intentionally.
Yea i dont submit really well mixed songs/ good songs to ng really.

Hi M33,

So I read your response to my review to you. I hope your dad got his job back or some other job. Everyone around the world is losing jobs from this recession. As for your age, I won't make a guess because if I over or underestimate your actual age it may be a negative thing.

Pertaining to your song, I liked arabian duel better because there was a little story involved. This one seems more of a simple rhythm with no story. Here is a tip to make good melodic patterns. Drums are your best friend. Transfer some of the drum patterns into lead instrumental patterns and you will be impressed with the results. Secondly, to make a song have more fill you can do many different things. I'm not sure what your program is capable of, but if it can do the things I listed then might as well try. Delay, reverb, distortion, white noise (cheesy but works ), pads, use more instruments. Harmonies in the form of supportive composition, complex drums, and fx sounds also add fill to the song.

I like your drums. Somewhat tribal in a way. The lead sound is your typical video game sound. Maybe your music program has a plugin that can help you make a variety of video game instruments. My last piece of advice which I personally do not do because that takes the creativity away.....is to go to websites with free samples. A bunch of songs on NG used pre made samples from websites to make their music. Generally they never go anywhere beyond NG because anyone can make music with premade samples. However, it is a great way to learn the basics before stepping into the more amateur level of making music. I can't tell you what professional level takes cause I'm not a professional musician.

Hope this helps 5/5 and 8/10 review

M33plord responds:

Hi again, thanks for the review.
About the music program I use, check it out at notessimo . net / compose . php (remove spaces)
Also, this program (sadly - ?) has no plugins and cannot use free samples.
Delay - I can make notes shorter and longer and insert gaps between song parts.
Distortion - nope. Reverb - nope. Pads - maybe, I'll check.
More instruments - okie then. White noise - high pitched sound may do it.

Hmm...ok lez see

Hi Duke,

I don't recall ever hearing you make trance music. Not sure why the past reviewers seem to be so harsh. I guess you shouldn't have said "blatant" use of Deadmau5 ideas. Don't even know that guy. You should take a listen to dj tatana spring breeze remix by Martin Roth. Back to your song...since a demo I will keep my review kinda simple and brief.

I don't know about your weird detuned robotic instrument fits well in this song. Its a unique factor, but seems a bit too happy to fit in with a dark trance song. I like your bass for the most part, but I can't really tell what note it is playing. I'm talking about the bass at 45 seconds. Maybe might want to raise the mid range frequencies so I can actually understand the timbre of that instrument. 1:17 I'm not a big fan of. It sounds quite familiar to a trance song I heard on you-tube. Don't know who the artist was but its an old trance song. However, the instruments are pretty so if you can come up with a different composition using those instrument then go for it.

Sometimes it amazes me how the NG audio portal is messed up. Your one of the many underdogs on NG. I like "underdog" music for some reason. Don't turn this song into an 8 minute trance. I'll fall asleep before it even finishes. GL with that.

5/5 and 9/10 review.

How the, NG is messed up

Hi Lira,

I never even heard about you on NG. When your definitely a underdog here. This song is much better than a lot of other songs on NG. However, I still notice some problems. I notice both you and pulstate made this so my criticisms will be to the both of you. I won't bother with the good things since you already got some good reviews from your past reviews talking about them.

Fixings:
1) You got a good voice...I think it might need more reverb to it to make your voice sound like an angel. Plus I can't really tell what your even saying in some parts of the song. :) I think you need to sing louder or need to get rid of some instruments or reverb on the instruments.
2) 2:00 the pads seem to not be eq as tight as I would have liked. There is some fuzzing going on in the background and the lower frequencies seem to be too intense. This is particularly noticeable at 2:45.
3) There doesn't seem to be enough vocals. Need to hear more of your voice.
4) Those drums with the high frequency cymbals going on make the song sound a bit messy.
5) 5:48 ouch. That hurt my ears. Some weird really high frequency spike in an instrument or your voice at that time. Fortunately that is very short lived.
6) 6:29 the EQ needs fixing again on those pads. This song is really repetitive too.

Umm, I stopped at like 7 minutes. I was hearing the same stuff again. I'll just be saying the same thing again. Anyway, its tough to come by confident singers on NG. Great job pulstae and yourself in producing this mix. 5/5 and 9/10 review.

Liralei responds:

This was an amateur sound engineering job done over Pulstate's original track only at 96 kbps, so the quality isn't fantastic.
As for the repetitiveness...well, such is the structure of trance. The beginning and ending 1:30 are meant to be fairly superfluous, for proper mixing.

I appreciate the feedback, and thanks for the support. :)

Hi Druid,

You don't have to review another song of mine. I'm actually returning you the favour. I'm kinda glad you submitted this song because I'm a terrible reviewer of hip hop music. I'm still kinda bad in reviewing classical music, but not as bad. :) Here goes

The beginning sounds really epic like a battle is about to start in China. Those drums from the timpani? are amazing. 35 seconds I love how you change the mood of the song. Diversity factor is good here. The other good point is that you don't make some completely different genre that has no relevance to your 1st theme. The marching drums are still there. I still see a war....just the happier part of the war when its all finished. Maybe its just me but when the song loops it kinda gives you chill. Kinda makes me imagine that there is peace and then all of a sudden some dark evil force (pardon the cheesy adjectives) just takes over.

Now, I listened to many other classical songs on NG and am making a comparison to yours. I have heard better war like classical songs on NG so I'll give you a 9/10. However, your song is still good. The instruments sounds good. What program do you use to make classical instruments? My music program has awful classical instruments and I'm too lazy to modify them.

Okay so again 5/5 and 9/10 review.

Bye for now

Druids-Warcry responds:

Thank you for your review sir! Really lot of critical feed back that was very much needed!

The program I used was FL8 not a lot of effects going on here, I'm using the Orchestral Kit from Edirol. Constierting this is my first classical piece of music I have made and your rating it with the others must mean I'm doing something right! But this was a snippet of what is to come! I really do hope to make it about 15 mins long

Hi F-777,

Well congrats on the top 5. Are the top 5 songs ranked from #1 to #5? So yours must be #3? So I don't really remember what I said in my past review to you when this was only a WIP. Anyway, let's see how this turned out.

Good:
1) Oh well, you didn't keep that disney feeling for a longer time. I'm kinda used to how you quickly jump into the climax. So contrary to what I said before...umm good job. :)
2) I think I already said good things about that party horn at 11 seconds. It sounds real good.
3) I'm enjoying the dirty bass. Maybe its just me but your bass seemed to have lost the dirty sounding at 1:13. :( Oh well, sub bass sounds good too.
4) 1:23 I like the tempo change. Nice idea. The digital sounds are pretty neat too and yes that dirty bass comes back.
5) 1:57 caught me off guard. I really thought you were sticking to the climax for good, but I like how you kinda added some extra buildup. I like surprises.
6) Might as well end with the best part of your song. The ending explosion is pretty epic.

Hmm:
1) I'm noticing a pattern with my past review. Well, again I'm not fond of that instrument at 32 seconds. Doesn't sound really partyish if that's a word.
2) 1:00 I'm not a fan of your phasing techno sound instrument. I think you did a great job on the automation, but it just was not the right instrument. The good thing is that it only took you 1 minute to transition into something new. I like the diversity.
3) Not a big deal but your transition at 1:42 seems slightly too short. It needs like half a second longer before to transition back to the climax. I sound so picky. :) Like I said, its not a big deal though.

So, the song didn't turn out repetitive. You got the party feel through the majority of this song...a very difficult thing to do. Most of your instruments fit this song. As for your decision to make a lengthy song....well go for it. Longer disney part and more party horn. 5/5 and 9/10 review. This song sounds much better produced than your past stuff. Keep going.

Bye for now

Hi Ian,

Are you still making your cd? Is this an experimental? Its a very strange tune. Some hardstyle, dnb, umm maybe dance, and yeah you do add a new perspective with music. Your right about the drums not really fitting in this song. Oh well, here is what I thought.

Good:
1) Let the insanity begin at 52 seconds. I like how you gradually brought in a new layer of instrument to keep changing things up.
2) 1:16 I like your instrumental pattern. However I think the instrument needs some revision. (Umm the latter point should go in the "hmm" section.
3) I like your kicks. They are very hard. Almost reminds me of jumpstyle music.
4) Okay so one highlight about your drum pattern is at 2:26. I love how you panned and delayed the cymbals and kick. Nice idea

Hmm:
1) At the very beginning of the song the bass was way too subbed. It doesn't actually sound like a note but some low sounding dirty noise. May need an eq adjustment.

2) Instrument at 9 seconds that fades in lacks dynamics. It might require some tighter control on the imaging. Not sure what your music program calls it.

10/10 on the originality. However, the tune does seem a bit whacked. I guess that's miscellaneous music for you. This is not something I'd listen to on the radio, but once in a while listening to the strangest forms of music is great. Again, wish you luck on your CD and here is your 5/5 and 9/10 review.

Bye for now

XTriNovaX responds:

Ya, im stilling working on my cd, its just shelved at the moment. I got bored and started doing this, and i actually it finished so i uploaded it. I'm currently working on a jump styleish DnB song.

To #3, multiband compressors are your friend.
To #4, Thats a flanger, gate, and like you said, a delay. Its fun to do.

To #1 Hmm, Its supposed to sound like a bass hit, so in a way its a sub sub bass hit.

I agree with the song not really fitting with its self, but it is experimental.

Thanks for the review!
