Hi Alert,

Umm, not sure how the past reviewer got the image of the old lady. Interesting idea though. Here is what I thought:

Good:
1) The piano sounds simply like a piano. The composition is interesting so kudos on the melody.
2) I like the pads....or are those strings? Anyway, its what brings the emotion to this song.
3) I'm intrigued by the drum patterns you used. Never heard a pattern like that before.
4) 3:00 lots of stuff is going on. I like busy music. It shows someone who knows how to make melodies match together.

Hmm:
1) I'm not too fond of the bass. Sounds a bit too funky to fit with this emotional song of yours. Maybe use a bass (not the synthesized bass but a real bass sound) instead of this farting like sound. :)
2) I think you might have too many high frequency sounds at 1:49. I can hear them all, but one of the instrument's makes some screeching sound. That might have caused the "too much high frequency" feeling.
3) I'm not a fan of that rising fx sound. Rave sounds in this kind of song is quite odd. Maybe cymbal roll could have been better.

Overall, I like the mood of this song. This is a song style that I hardly hear on NG which is quite refreshing. I did sense a bit of repetitiveness with your piano melody. Other tthen what I said already, I think that this song is long enough as it is. Keep up the good work with the layering of instruments. I can see future songs by you to be melodically complex making you stand out from guys who don't know how to play the piano. 5/5 and 9/10 review.

alertG responds:

thanks for the detailed review. i did notice some of the things that you had mentioned, but some of the other points were opinions that made me listen back on the song more intently. I did start with the beginning piano beat, but yeah i did notice the repetativeness. The problem I had was taking out the piano would make it feel like something is missing. However, maybe I can change the "high frequency" sounds to mix better and take out the piano. I might change it up a little.

In my opinion I like the fading in synth, but thanks for all of your feedback!

Hi IO,

I never actually got that many song reviews in such a short time so time to catch up on reviewing back.

Another short one by me. You seem to produce really short songs limiting my criticisms.

So, you really have a interest to making the weird mystery type of music. Where does your inspiration come from? There is one sound I enjoyed. It's that fuzzy sound. I thought the pad was quite mellow yet strangely evil. As for the drums, I didn't mind them much. Didn't interfere with the mood of this loop. I'm interested in what kind of full length song you can make.

5/5 and 9/10 review.

Bye for now

InvisibleObserver responds:

Soon we'll have been through all of each others work.

I've been posting a few shorter loops that may be helpful to NG users, as for full length, I have a couple up, but they simply take much longer to make, and even longer for me to be comfortable with calling them complete, and I'm trying to avoid putting up things that aren't near completion.

Yes I do have an interest in an odd 'style' of music, I'm not a big fan of the mainstream style of sounds (Typically house = yucky, as an example).

Inspiration comes from lots of little oddities, I remember a garbage truck making an odd sound and I tried to recreate it. Other times though I'll just sit down and see what I can come up with, without an end goal in mind.

Hi M33,

Yeah, I think I have to agree with the past reviewer. The program your using is kind of limited. The good thing though is that your forced to make a unique and catchy rhythm when you don't have the better programs. I notice some ppl with really good programs make horribly composed (notation patterns) music because they can get away with the nice sounding instruments. Anyway, I don't think FL is the way to go. Too many people use FL and it produces such unoriginal stuff you hear so often on NG....exceptions are those with lots of FL experience who can come up with unique stuff.

So back to the song....there is only two instruments going. No drums or bass which makes the song kinda empty. I'm not a general rock fan so I don't technically know what makes a good rock song. I'll give you a 5/5 vote and 8/10 for being a really short loop. Practice with more musical patterns so that when you finally get a better music program, your ready to jump right into original stuff.

Bye for now

M33plord responds:

Hi again :)
Okay then.
Yah, my dad lost his job - laid off - and even if i wanted to get FL studio, I looked at the price for the fruityloops edition, and UGH! $129!?

You probably have no idea how old I am.
If you want to guess, send me a PM.

Hi Johhny,

I heard about this song in the forums so I checked it out. That is some long explanation for your song! Anyway, seems like your past reviews have covered everything...pros and cons. I'll just add some extra redundant stuff you probably already know about.

Well, first I think the song is weird. The beginning sounds generic...yes I heard that bass sound from other trance songs on youtube. Sounds awesome though. I like psytrance a bit so me like the fast bass pattern.

I don't like that high pitch sound at 30 seconds. You should have used a different instrument. I'm not digging the composition of this piece. It doesn't rise to a climax.

2:18 the guitar sounds awesome.....iif it weren't a trance song. This is the weird part. Again, I don't think a guitar should have been used in this song....or at least not play the lead role. That 30 seconds instrument is back again. Sorry, I'm just annoyed at that sound.

4:10 I like this part. Quite magical and happy. You really got to start changing that pattern which the bell is now playing. The diversity is really lacking in this piece. I do like the drum roll build up.

So I guess I can pretty much stop here. I'm hearing the same stuff again.

Its hard for me to tell how hard you spent on making this song. 3 months is a heck of a lot of work...but reading a past review by karco.....he said he noticed generic instruments. I personally do not own fl, cubase, or nexus....I use Logic studio. For the benefit of the doubt, I will assume you made all the instruments so big kudos....except for that 30 second instrument. :) As for the composition (the note patterns), I did not find it very difficult to make. However, that guitar sure brought an interesting spin to your song....more original I guess....but not original for the composition. So to conclude, this song sounds much better than a lot of songs on NG. I'm not a fan of diverse music, but if this makes you happy, I do think your music is less repetitive than pulstate stuff. However, he got signed so umm yeah. The rest of us are still learning including myself and the good thing is that were are all getting better together. Things are looking upwards for the NG musicians. GL with your future stuff (I know this is an old song of yours) and wish me luck too.

5/5 and 9/10 review.

Hey! Sorry for taking so long to respond to your review, I didnt even notice I had a new review until now.

Well first of all I want to say thank you for taking so much time and dedication to write this review, I really appreciate it, but as you can probably tell Ive already passed the skills I had when I made this song, so there isnt much in here that I didnt already know...but still thank you very much for your kind and awesome review ^^

Good luck to you too and have a nice week!

Review

Hi Pulstate,

I'm assuming your two latest songs you were just experimenting. Didn't seem to be something you would make if you tried.

1) Maybe its just me but I notice you use like the the exact same eq levels for your drums in a lot of your songs. It would be nice to have high cut filtered drums once in a while to add some different spin to your songs.
2) The fx sounds were pretty cool. Reminds me of space and the vast emptyness.
3) 45 seconds in finally the bass comes in. Was waiting for that. Nice bass sound.
4) You don't really have much of a lead.....unless your bass is the lead. The other instruments seem to be all background support. I was hoping for a nice lead instrument (besides the bass) to take control over this song. Oh well
5) Your transitions are a bit slow for my taste. A 15 second transition is a bit too long for me. However, at 2:32 the new instrument sounds great.
6) 2:47 I didn't like this part. The delay is okay, but the composition sounding like some happy ancient chinese pattern. It did not match with the mood of this song. Fortunately the bass that eventually game back brought the seriousness to this song again.
7) I'm gonna have to hammer you on the lack of diversity. There isn't an astounding amount of stuff going on.

So, you did say you ran out of inspiration a quarter away through. I'm not sure why you just took a break for a while from this song and come back to it when you had the inspiration. The bass sounded really professional and this song could have been a guaranteed sign..... I'll still give you a 5/5 and 9/10 review.

Hi Tuneit,

Hmm, so I don't recall ever hearing a techno song from you. Is this your first ever techno song? These are my concerns:

Good:
1) I like the filter rise of that lead instrument at the beginning of the song. The sonar sound is pretty neat too.
2) Dirty bass at 1:25. I love dirty instruments. Good job here
3) I'm enjoying the drums. You picked the right ones. Nice panning hi hats with the four to the floor beat. Me like.
4) 2:34 I kinda like the new instrument that comes in. Kinda has a mission impossible sound to it. This is the best part of the song.
5) The wind fx sounds are pretty nice. Never knew underwater actually had wind. :)

Hmm:
1) 17 seconds that lead instrument sounded neat when its filters were changing, but now I'm sensing the generic stuff. Especially at 45 seconds is where I'm not feeling the beat. I think the instrument needs a bit more work. It kinda sounds funny so that might be a good thing I guess.
2) Okay, so the sonar was cool for a bit, but now I heard it too many times. Needs to stop soon.
3) 3:30 I don't think was a good idea at all. Just listening to the sonar is kinda boring. Maybe instead of 32 seconds of sonar alone....cut it down to like 10 seconds or less.

Overall, the song has somewhat of a story feel. Bit repetitive and the lead instrument is not developed that well. I know you can make a much better instrument than the one used in this song. You seem to have the panning stuff understood. Mixing and mastering seems to be good too. Looks like your song got remixed according to the past reviewer. Congrats on that. 5/5 vote and 9/10 review.

Thanks a lot... But i like the sonar sound D=

Anyway thanks.

Sorry for the short respond...

Hi Sky,

Well I wrote a review to this song already, but before I submitted it I lost power to my house. This song is short so I'll make some short review again.

So I noticed that this song loops actually pretty well. I'm not a big fan of the instruments you used. It doesn't fit the club theme too well. I don't know how you make your instruments, but you might have to intensify the lower frequencies to give the nice club feel. Kinda like what you did at 42 seconds. Only you now need a lead to accompany that bass.

1:08 your transition is not smooth. Maybe a fade in might have been smoother. Lastly, at 1:22 when that dark bass comes back.....it doesn't seem to fit well. Kinda messy sounding and the contrast from your happy lead sound with that darkish bass don't mix together.

I didn't hear any clipping and all instruments were pretty audible. I think you should stick to one mood throughout the entire song especially for club music. Eg. If your going for hardcore mean kind of style, don't mix it with happy nonhardcore stuff.

Overall, I'll give you a 5/5 vote and 9/10 review.

Hi, Vapour,

Not bad of a song. I'm really lazy now so hope my review makes sense.

Beginning sounds pretty so keep that in your full version song. The big problem is the bass. Sounds quite generic. Maybe make it a lower pitch bass or make it sound more dirty. I like the fx wind effects.

I like the diversity in this song. 1:09 sounds quite calm. Not very "hard" of a beat. The party horn doesn't seem to give that "move it" feel. It may need some further modifications. Sounds a bit cheesy. Keep the delay panning effects and the happy bell sounds. I like them.

Lastly, try and make the song more diverse. I like that kind of music better....others may disagree.

5/5 vote and 9/10 review.

M1CKEH responds:

Wow, its actaulyl a nice review.
Really, thanks alot.
I will get onto those problems ASAP, thanks for the 5 /10 ! It really is appreciated :)
Myself, I noticed some wind problems, but they can easily be sorted.
The bass I shall chop and change, and the beat I will try to 'harden' and roughen without totally phucking the mastering up, lol.
I'll also try to relate more to the title of this song. Thanks a bunch.
I may jsut email you when i've improved :)

Chears,
Vapour.

Hey wait hmm review

Hi Duke,

This sounds like a mixture of techno and house music. You got me lost with the title of this song. This is some very weird song. Maybe the screwed up detuning your going for. Anyway.....

Good:

1) Hey, well you really went loud on the drums to start the song. I like that....though I'm a bit interested why you say my songs are too loud. This one seems to be a lot louder than my stuff.
2) 31 seconds I really like that techno saw like instrument. Very dirty...
3) I am digging the vibes at 1:02. Awesome sub bass. Reminds me of benny benassi changing style song.
4) 2:22 I like your mini build up into the next transition. Nuff said

Hmm:
1) Some very long drum intro. Some people may just get bored of the song before it even starts at 31 seconds.
2) Meh, what is with the dinky claps at 1:34. More power in those claps would have been much better. I guess you did that as a build up to 1:48?
3) Huh? 2:36 doesn't make sense. The transition was quite abrupt. I'm not a fan of dissonance so yeah don't like the detuning going on. All opinion of course.
4) Hmm, I guess your description of a 2 hour train is somewhat correct. Not as boring as a train ride that long, but kinda repetitive. At least you add a extra layer of an instrument to make it differentiate slightly from the previous parts. Really, you should have cut this song at the 4 minute mark and it would have been better.

Overall, I'm impressed with the production skills. Great job with the eq and automations. I hardly noticed the good fx sounds. That saw instrument was what sucked me into this song. Anyway, 5/5 vote and 9/10 review. Keep making this stuff. Its way better than those top 5 songs I hear. :)

DukeLukeProd responds:

Hey MS
Hmm as far as I remember I've never mentioned the loudness of your music in a negative context, on the contrary - the better your mix the more you can boost the volume. I might've complained about the volume of a single instrument though.
I think the saw is indeed a plain minimoog saw (from Spectrasonics Trilogy).

The detuning - what I've done here is an extreme version of what all those electro-house producers are currently doing (Deadmau5 can probably be seen as the originator) Can't say that I find it particularly pretty but it's certainly different and attracts your attention.
The track ain't much more than an experiment, I haven't put a lot of effort, thought or time into the song structure, just wanted to make the sound somewhat decent. But you're probably perfectly right about the additional instrument, without it there's not enough going on to justify the 6 and a half minutes.
However, thanks for the great review.
Cheers

Hi MMD,

So its one of those war kind of classical theme songs. You make some really nice classical instruments. I don't know how, but you just do. Kudos. Here is what I think.

Good:

1) The beginning sounds like a supernintendo rpg game. The violins and bass are quite emotional. Me like.
2) 25 seconds in the drums reminded me of hip hop drums. Anyway, this is where I feel some battle approaching. Nice
3) 56 seconds in comes that awesome bass again. I don't know why I like that instrument so much. Maybe its the tremolo going on.
3) 1:57 the best part of the song. Its like some old style salsa. I dig the clap drums.

Hmm:
1) Well, the production is nice. Only issue is it seems you took a bunch of themes used already and put them together. I love the diversity factor, but the originality isn't really high here.

Nothing else to say. Great job on this song. I like your songs with no vocals. Keep up the good work.

5/5 vote and 9/10 review.
