Woah funky wierd

Hey Ginchy,

Now this is something I don't here from you....dance music? I have not heard any of your stuff for quite some time so maybe your old stuff is dance too. Well, kudos on making something different from your usual style. Here is what I thought.

Good:
1) Well you got lyrics. That's always a rare thing on NG.
2) I like the kick pattern and the mysterious beat from the start to 11 seconds.
3) 2:18 I like the very brief bass that comes in. Too bad it didn't progress to a climax.

Hmm:
1) I'm not a big fan of that generic oscillation pattern. Honestly, it sounds very cheesy. However, I think you said that shortmonkey made the tune and you did the lyrics? Well you can pass on the message to him/her.
2) I here some dissonance at some parts of the song. Eg 1:03 and 2:08 Maybe it was done for a original factor, but I don't think it fit well.
3) The vocals sound cool with a radio kind of fx, but I don't think the beat of the vocals actually matched the background beat. Some parts it did...just not all which was wierd.
4) The guitar needs a bit work. Sounds too synthesized. The feedback and distortion on that guitar just sounds like artificial white noise...therefore not real feedback and distortion.

Overall, good job on singing the lyrics. What could have made this song much better is more professional sounding instruments rather than the generic type. I don't know if this really means anything to you Ginchy, but maybe more towards shortmonkey. I want to also point out the good things shortmonkey may have done. First, the panning was well done. Vocal panning was good too. I like his various kinds of drums he used. I heard some filter modifications to the drums so kudos there. The kick seems to be good. May need a bit more presence but it sounds dancy.

What program do you guys use? Anyway, 5/5 vote and 9/10 review to the both of you.

Bye for now

Ginchy responds:

Wow, what a kick-ass and helpful review! Yes, you're correct in assuming all the non-voice parts were Shortmonkey's work, so I'll pass that info on to him.

The "dissonant" part you're referring to is the progression during the chorus (I think). This is a remake, that is, Deep Purple wrote the song, and if you listen to the original version they use the same progression. I chose to make it a vocal harmony since it wasn't present in the rest of the music.

As far as the vocals being off beat, well, I guess that would be my bad =)

Thanks again for your helpful review yo!

Hi Vertigo,

Well I have a feeling that funky fx sound took you quite some time to make. Anyway, here is what I have to say.

Good:
1) A unique fx sound. Never heard of it before. I'm talking about the sound at the beginning of the song.
2) The bass sounds excellent. Nuff said.
3) Me like the percussion. Very simple and not too crowded keeping the instruments as the main feature.
4) 0:54 the new lead instrument is pretty nice. I like the panning and filter modifications going on.

Hmm:
1) So I'm for originality, but that bass pattern is so overused. I think its a very catchy simple pattern but to use it in the entire song is a big no no for me. Of course, we all have our opinions so this won't even effect your score I give you.
2) 1:50 I didn't like that new instrument that pops up. It sounds detuned bringing a dissonance sound I'm not too fond of. Sounds a bit cheesy too.
3) Well the song is repetitive. Trance is supposed to be repetitive I guess, but that's something about trance I don't like. Again, this is strictly opinion and won't even effect your score. However, I would appreciate you you made a non repetitive trance song.

Overall, I like how you are trying to make a complicated. This is only a demo, so I'm expecting you got a lot of surprises in the final version. If you can somehow make that unique sounding fx at the beginning of the song more in tune to the bass as well as make a less generic sound at 1:50 than that would be great. Also the demo is already 4 minutes 25 secs long! I'm interested in what more you can add? Hopefully it doesn't turn out into a 16 minute song or anything like that. Here is a 5/5 vote and 8/10 review since a demo.

Bye for now

Hey Music-story!

Thanks for the review i really appreciate it!

i waddled (clicked) over to your page and listened to some of what you have made which really made your review coincide with what you have produced. I did find your take on music quite profound and i hope i can learn a bit from what you have uploaded.

There is quite a bit or work i need to put into this yet, and as you can probably tell there are no transitions in this song at all haha. just took something, looped it, and plopped it down around the area i felt sounded best.

With the acid line i was having a bit of trouble finding out exactly how i wanted this to feel. I could have either added a more intense synth or a lighter synth. I experimented with both options and felt this song sounded better with the lighter melody you heard at 1:50.

For the bass i will be changing it to follow the melody that pops in at 1:50

For the acid and melody syth i will probably be keeping them as to me they sound great together even though they both follow two separate note progressions.

Really I am just experimenting and learning from what comes out. If you check out any of my previous submissions they are all over the place in mood and style hahaha.

Hi Viz,

I think house will never be popular on NG. I like house because its more for the older audience. I don't know if this is a remix or not. Half of me is saying you got the vocal from your sample pack making this not a remix, but the other half tells me there is a body rock song out there and I can't believe I missed it. Here is what I thought.

Good:
1) Well I love the fx vocals. Sounds something you here in professional music.
2) 0:30 I really enjoy this part. Cowbell going too. Great beat right here....don't know why so few people on NG don't like that kind of house beat.
3) I like how with the typical kick n clap drums you added in a fuzzy kind percussion on top...only for a short moment though.
4) Well done on making the bass. Sounds awesome.

Hmm:
1) I'm not for the trance sweepy like sound at the beginning of the song. Sounds a bit on the generic side. However your entrance explosion into 30 seconds was good.
2) Umm, is this song incomplete? Wait, your response to the previous review just answered that. Hmm, why not the complete version on NG?

Okay, so I like this song. Its better than benni benassi's new cd....though some label as a variety of genre's of music...dance mainly. The funny thing is that some sound that goes with your kick sounds like a bouncing plastic ball. You can really notice it at 2 :48. I think you started making house music like only a month or two ago and this is your first house song I heard on NG (besides the one you sent me) so 5/5 and 10/10 review. Though I probably would have liked the full version better.

Bye for now

DJ-VIZ responds:

There is an original body rock song out there, its not house though...I actually forgot if it was pop or a commercial trance song lol...one of those? Anyway, I liked the vocals, and decided to give it a shot. I always like using tribal percussion in house accompanied by the deep rich bass. I think the drums worked well too. As for the trance sweepey sound ... I thought it was a good fill in for the build up. I was messing around with Nexus, and somehow that seemed to fit in there. House is definitly an older genre, I guess...I think most people on Ngs are into the happy high pitched vocals type of trance ... and whatever... I was too. Once you get into electro/house though you can't go back. I'm not sumbitting the full anyway just because I am going to use it for other purposes, such as the two other demos I put up here. I will send you the full via email one day though. As for the kick, it kind of does sound like a bouncy ball lol...Never thought of it that way.
I have heard a few songs on Bennassis new cd, its decent. I am going to check out the whole thing. I started a benassi style project, but I don't know if I will ever finish it. I have always been interested in making house, but never could find the right sounds. I really started making full house tracks about 2 months ago...so your right there. Not bad right? lol.
Anywya, I have to demos up here before this sumbission! Check em out :P ... Let me know when you have a new song up!!!

What the?

So your leaving now?

Well, where is your new site? Is it that media fire link you gave? Anyway here is what I thought.

Good:
1) Bass sounds very nice. The kick has a lot of presence. Like major amounts of spreader you put on that or something.
2) The heavenly like fx and I guess sounds like an instrument too is pretty.
3) I like the kick mini rolls for your transitions and Cymbal splashes
4) Pretty piano too. Nuff said
5) 5:00 I like the calmness right here. Very relaxing. The kicks are playing a interesting pattern too so kudos.

Hmm:
1) Well the song sounds like an oasis, but with that in mind the bass does sound a bit out of place. Bass sounds too mean or something you would here in a hardcore song.
2) I am assuming this is a demo due to the title. With that I guess you already know this, but I'm not sensing a real progression. That piano and bass part at 3:12 to 5:00 dragged out the song.

Overall, I think your a master at mixing and mastering. Instrumentals are not cheesy sounding and your fx sounds are nice. Since this will be your last submission, i'll leave you with a 5/5 vote and 10/10 review. Before you leave for good, give me one more of your in depth reviews for my latest trance song. GL with your future possibly professional career in music and you better let me know when you actually do become a professional so I can ask you for some free CD's. :)

Bye for now

Karco responds:

Sorry for the somewhat late response Music-story! I've been traveling. :)

I haven't started uploading to a new site yet, I really haven't had time to consider where I want to go. Hopefully once things start cooling down I'll sit down and look through my options. Mediafire is indeed my uploading site of choice for now.

I'll respond point by point, as usual, I'll skip the points where I have nothing to add:
Good:
1) Thanks - the kick's presence can be attributed to the fact that it's in reality four unique and modified (to varying degrees) VEC samples playing in unison. :D
4) Sampled from Reasoner's original, thank him!

Hmm:
1) You're the first to say so (I believe), but really the bass was a mimic of the bass in Daniel Kandi's remix of Masters & Nickson - Out There (5th Dimension), as an experiment. It was also quite plain, was a weak point of the track in my opinion, and so I don't plan on making any more like it. :D
2) This isn't a demo, the original is actually called Instrumental #4. And there certainly is a real progression, not sure why you're not hearing it...?

Two mistakes in this last paragraph of yours. I'm hardly a master of mixing/mastering in comparison to professionals, and I'm not leaving for good. ;D I don't like to review tracks on request either, but if I can I'll listen sometime and if I think it's worth it, I'll review. And I believe you still have my e-mail if you'd like to contact me once you hear I'm getting out there. :D Thanks for the review!

Woah

Hi Jebbal,

This song has so much white noise and panning going on. Party feeling times 2. Since such a short demo, I really have nothing much to say but take your bitter sweet time finishing this up. Don't want to ruin this cause your definitely on the right track. Tell me when the final comes out. Another epic song like your revelation song.

Bye for now

Jebbal responds:

Hello! I've responded to your other review already haha.

I will take my bitter sweet time on it. Don't really have a choice with how busy I am. I'm not calling this finished until its AWESOME! 10 times better than revelation maybe.

Thanks for the review!

Hey nice

Hi Milkcarton,

Only 3 days with logic 8? You must of had logic 7 before or some similar program. Logic pro is an amazing program....one person who works with professional music artists like billy talent said logic pro is more fit for rock songs rather than electronic which is Reason's speciality. I beg to differ, you made a pretty good trance song. Did you use any samples? I have no idea where to get samples for logic pro. Back to your song. Here is what I thought.

Good:
1) That fx background sound is awesome. Which synthesizer did you use to make it? I generally stick to ES2 ES1 and sculpture so maybe I'm not using the right synthesizer to make my fx sounds.
2) Nice bass sound and pattern. Nuff said.
3) I see you used the arp...or sounds like an arp lead on logic. Anyway it fits well.
4) Do you use ultrabeat for your drums? I liked your selection of drums and it seems like ultrabeat is the only good drum synthesizer on logic 8 thus the assumption.

Hmm:
1) 1:03 I don't like the bass and piano by itself. Especially when the bass gets really low.
2) 1:31 sounds generic lead instrument. Good on the automation, but maybe a modification to that instrument would be a whole lot better.
3) 2:53 I was expecting a new build up but than I saw the timer run out and I'm like it can't end like this. Oh well.

Okay, the fx made this song good. I'm sure you could have come up with a better title. The originality may be lacking, but i don't think that really matters in trance.
5/5 vote and since its your first song with logic (unless you actually produced more than 1 song in 3 days?!) I'll give you a 10/10.

Bye for now

Mrmilkcarton responds:

I still have my VeC samples so I import them into logic to use. My FX is a mix of sculpture and samples I have. I used mainly the ES synthes though.

Ultrabeat for the drums of course. I just do the drag samples settings and make my own settings for it.

As for other programs, I've used FL studios and tried out Reason to an extent. Never used Logic before but I have a good understanding of what these programs are like.

Review

I have not reviewed a hip hop song for a very long time which led me to listen to your song. So, you just started learning fl studio 7? If so, your on the right track with the instruments. I'm no expert for critiquing hip hop, but maybe keeping your piano in key would help. Just a hunch, but are you playing C D E F with the piano? Maybe your theme is in a minor key so a major key piano won't fit too well.

I like that errie haunting instrument. Makes the song sound quite creepy if that's what you were attempting.

According to your description, it seems like this song is only a rough draft so maybe all I said you already knew. If your still working on this song than give me a pm when the final version is out.

5/5 vote and 8/10 review.

drs555 responds:

well overall thanks a lot!!! on the review this was originally done and over with but you jus probably inspired me to do more with this song to make it better... pce and thanks

Hey victim,

I use logic studio too. I think logic studio is better for rock stuff with guitar amp pro. I'm assuming you used it?

So I'm not much of a rock fan so this review may be useless to you. The guitar sounds real enough. Kudos to your buddy that played the guitar. I don't know if he or you made that oscillating fx guitarish sound. I like it though.

Your probably going to need some vocals in this or add more instruments with the guitar because it doesn't really build up to something greater than the piano and guitar.

Song sounds a bit repetitive. Kinda makes me sleepy which may or may not be a good thing....that depends what you were going for.

Overall, I thought your notation was pretty nice. More patterns are needed to keep me interested. I'll give you a 5/5 and 9/10 review.

Bye for now

victim1979 responds:

Thanks Music story, we made this hoping we could get a vocalist on board, but nothing as of yet. If you know anyone let me know, was thinking someone with a chris cornell-ish voice would be perfect (i am probably dreaming on that one!) Anyways, thanks for the feedback.

Review

Hey, Millennium,

This is a techno loop? Song sounds pretty amazing.

Good:
1) Beginning is just great. Excellent beat and the kick is perfect.
2) I'm enjoying the fx sounds and the unique drums here and there.
3) Filters are modified not too much to bring in a rising feel. Nice touch on the automation.
4) 2:20 the piano sounds so depressing but epic. This is a good change in mood. Like the diversity.
5) I noticed the scratchy like drums or fx that goes with the piano. I loved them.
6) 3:41 Party time......I like that lead fuzzy instrument.
7) 4:39 Nice pattern again. This song should be in dance.
8) I am enjoying the diversity in this song. Rare to find musicians who make a 8 minute song change a lot. Big kudos here.
9) 7:00 Maybe a more distorted instrument, but the detuneing is pretty neat on that instrument.

Hmm:
1)2:58 some really low instrument is clipping a lot. Simple mastering can fix that. I actually didn't like the whole 3:13 to 3:39. Just sounded a bit too cheesy with the pattern speeding up.
2) 4:11 Sounds a bit messy. Maybe this was where you should have toned down the cutoff or white noise, or whatever you did to make the fuzzy sound.
3) A few cheesy instruments here and there took the epic feel away. Not much though so not a big deal.
4) Okay, so the ending section you did not have to drag on for that long. Again not a big deal.

Overall, this is a excellent song. I can tell you put a lot of work into this song. Keep up the good work. 5/5 vote and a rare 10/10 by me...the diversity gave you the 10.

Only one favour. I made a trance song and I'm hoping it turned out correctly. If you got any opinions just tell me.

Hey Tuneit,

So I'm not a big fan of hardstyle, but I am interested in how you make the kicks so prevalent. I've been working on how to make a nice hard kick, but not yet able to get it right. Some tip on how to make a kick with more well kick would be nice.

Okay, so I saw the reviews that gave you a 4 and 5. Yes, the repetitiveness is there, but you know that already. This review will be short.

Beginning fx is good. May not be the best fit. Sounds like a vehicle passing by. The lead instrument has a lot of static like reverb. Did you use clip distortion?

There seems to be a lot of stoppages. Interesting, but I'm more for the continual flow of the song. Eg. 0:15,, 0:19, 0:49-1:02, 1:31, 1:40 are where the song stops. Maybe one or two stoppages in the song is good, but not more than that...my opinion of course.

You did a great job with the reving drum and reverb levels. Percussion seems to fit well....makes it dance like. 2: 10 I like that weird sounding instrument. Reminds me of benny benassi. Overall a 5/5 vote and 9/10 review. Maybe make the song more diverse next time.

Thank you alot.
